How I Make My Living Organizing Dead People Part II
Presented by Becky Hill, Head Librarian of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.
The Hayes Obituary Index provides a tool for researchers to easily pinpoint information related to their family history and then visit the library where the records are located or contact the library directly for assistance. In 2001, internet access was provided. The online Obituary Index has a shopping cart feature that allows users to purchase copies of obituaries online and has become a substantial source of income to the library. This project has won awards, received a variety of grants, and is now a regional database serving 25 libraries in Northern Ohio.
Partnering with WGTE Public Broadcasting of Toledo since late 2004, the index has been revamped and can be used by any library, not just those affiliated with the Hayes Center. Libraries can now have the same features as the online index, but customized to their own specifications. Becky Hill coordinated the volunteers and staff for the indexing and inputting, designed the format and organized the mounting of the website and shopping cart. She will share her experiences with others who have similar resources.
